General
One To One Tuition

Landscape workshops are one to one tuition. If more than one person attends, each receives a discount.

Booked on Demand

Landscape workshops have no preset dates, being booked on demand when you want, all year.

Duration

UK cottage workshops last 8 days. Workshops outside the UK last 11 days including travel days.

The Workshops Aim: To teach how to create beautiful, personal artistic statements, by changing your approach to landscape photography at the fundamental level.

What Will I Learn?

The landscape photography workshops teach you how to create landscape images with aesthetic quality and technical perfection. A complete, holistic digital photography workflow that will change your complete approach at the fundamental level, to how you create beautiful artistic landscape images with aesthetic values. They will make you re-evaluate all your pre-conceived ideas and concepts about how to photograph the landscape. Aesthetic, artistic and technical skills taught in an easy and logical way.

Landscape Photography Workshops teaching you artistic vision and technical perfection. Creativity is the ability to make artistic landscape photographs personal to you and the objective of the creative landscape photography workshops. The techniques taught are just a means to an end; turning your vision into print. I show you how to take your landscape photography to the next level, from the descriptive to the artistic using one comprehensive workflow.

The digital workflow is taught step by step. Three subjects: Previsualization, Landscape Photography and Photoshop Post-Production. An innovative, holistic, yet simple structured photography workflow that gives your landscape photography first, a high-quality technical foundation, then a creative overlay; allowing you total creative freedom to make your own unique, personal artistic landscape statements. Read my customer reviews.

Most landscape photography workshops are more photographic holidays with little emphasis on education. Most post-production is taught in colleges with little emphasis on creating real photographs.  Neither teach the complete process of image making. My workshops take a holistic educational approach; one methodical workshop teaching you all the skills you need to make real landscape photographs from start to finish in a simple step-by-step method.

Do I need previous experience? No. No matter what level your previous experience is, all the landscape photography workshops students cover the complete digital workflow from start to finish; so, you leave the workshops with a documented and practiced, structured process to follow for after the workshops finish. The more advanced you are at the start, just means more and more advanced solutions can be taught within the workshops time frame.

Subject 01. Previsualization
01 WHAT YOU WANT

Judge “What it could become; Not what it is now”. Look at the scene in front of you and imagine it as a final print. Does it have potential?

02 NOMINATE THE HERO

Study the scene. Nominate what is the main actor, secondary actor and supporting cast. Like books, photos need a story. Is the story clear?

03 BUILD TWO MENTAL LISTS

Create two mental lists while shooting. The assets you have already taken and the assets you still require to create the photograph you imagine.

Subject 02. Photography
04 BASE IMAGE

The best possible image taken in a single frame. The image all other assets will be added to when creating the perfect final photograph.

05 TECHNICAL ASSETS

Bracketed exposures for rich shadow detail and highlights. Exposures that make a beautiful quality image. Rich shadow tones. Sparkling highlights.

06 ARTISTIC ASSETS

The light may not fall perfectly everywhere in one frame. When the light does fall on other parts of the composition, these are taken as extra assets.

Subject 03. Photoshop
07 COMPOSITE

Bring all the technical and artistic assets together, to create a single layered image as if the most perfect single raw file taken by the camera.

08 TECHNICAL QUALITY

Take the composited single image and now polish it to become a beautiful image in its own right. Though high quality, it still feels generic.

09 AESTHETIC QUALITY

Turn the high quality, generic image into your own personal artistic statement; adding the artistic layer on top of the technically perfect foundation.

Typical Itinerary

The landscape photography workshops itinerary is designed in a structured way to contain a smooth transition from me demonstrating at the start of the workshops, to you working more hands-on and independently as the workshops progress and your knowledge of the digital workflow increases. This is to prepare you for working alone after the workshops. At every opportunity we take photographs both as workshop images to work on and to avoid Photoshop sessions being too long. A brief summary follows:

01 DAY ONE

Photography. Previsualization and how the camera alters the image tones. Understanding the camera histogram and how to read it to determine the best exposures for great shadow tones. How to break down the contrast problem into various exposures.

02 DAY TWO

Compositing. Editing images. Preparing files then compositing the various exposures together to create a single image that represents the most perfect raw file taken by the camera. Blending and multiple masking techniques, image sharpening and alignment issues.

03 DAY THREE

Technical. Taking the composited image to a beautiful technical image full of rich tonality. Creating the optical illusion of a real landscape with spatial depth, 3d object form, light and texture. A beautiful, but still generic feeling landscape photograph lacking personality.

04 DAY FOUR

Artistic. Transforming the technical foundation into an artistic statement. Color transformations to add a cohesive feel and help spatial depth, tonal transformations to radically alter the image and enhance the light content. General painterly and artistic techniques for creativity.

05 DAY FIVE

Revision. The day is spent with the student doing the complete process alone, ideally with only the help of the documentation. This is to identify then correct any weak areas in either knowledge or documentation that would stall progress when working alone after the workshops finish.

06 DAY SIX

Optional. The day is open ended with the student choosing the agenda. The day can be used to shoot more landscape photographs or work on any weak links in the chain, even working on a new image and working through the complete digital workflow one last time.

Why was the ‘Travel With You’ my best option?

“Choosing to travel to a new destination with David for the landscape photography workshops was the perfect solution. I was able to learn how David approached his photography from inception to completion with personal one-to-one tuition – BUT on ‘real’ locations. This created portfolio quality landscape photographs. This gave me a valuable insight into his entire approach. I came back with some incredible landscape images from Prague and learned valuable additional techniques like researching and scouting locations. Learning the digital workflow with one-to-one tuition and returning with great portfolio material made this option the perfect investment of my time and value for money.”

How did the workshop change my landscape photography?

“Even though I had 10 years of experience as a full-time fine art photographer, I gained extremely valuable information and techniques during my personal workshop with David. Using a relaxed and approachable teaching style David presented revolutionary ideas that have taken my landscape photography and post processing to whole new levels. You don’t know what you don’t know and after my time with David I see things I had never realized before. I learned new ways to improve my photography that have made huge improvements in the aesthetic values; mood, depth and quality of my images.

David has obviously spent years developing his knowledge into a complete system from image composition and capture to post processing. I now utilize his step-by-step workflow in all my work. I especially enjoyed the back story of how David studied master landscape painters and applied their techniques in his digital workflow. The idea of spending 11 days with someone I had never met was a bit of a concern, but David is super personable. Now that I have completed the landscape photography workshop, I cannot imagine absorbing all the information in less time.

I heartily recommend David and his landscape workshops – totally worth the investment in time and finances.”

Why was the ‘Your Home Overseas’ landscape option essential?

“When I first contacted David, I was resident architect on the renovation of a French château in the Loire valley, France, and although I had time off during the day – I really needed to be on site, as any renovation of an ancient building throws up surprise questions at odd times. We planned to do a landscape workshop around the various Châteaux in my region. Our shoots were planned in advance and David created a structured tuition plan that allowed me to stay in contact with my work but learn the techniques in a logical and meaningful manner. Bringing the landscape photography workshops to me was very unique but the perfect solution given my work situation.”

How did the free extra portfolio days help?

“I found the portfolio days a huge bonus. The landscape photography workshop was structured and had specific goals. On our portfolio days, the pressure to learn a specific technique was lifted, I could observe how David worked and benefited from a more informal exchange on composition, analysis of light and getting the raw material right, at the camera stage. I found David very patient, open and generous with his knowledge. A great tutor who is easy to get on with and makes learning easy and enjoyable. I got as much out of our portfolio days as the more formal and structured workshop. If you really want to learn, he puts in the effort and I reckon the week we spent together was worth a year of self-study.”

Why was the ‘UK Landscape Photography Workshops’ option my choice?

“In my view, going to the UK provided two great benefits. A great opportunity to use David’s vast knowledge and learn his digital workflow without distraction, allowed for hours of one-to-one time to learn his concepts and Photoshop post-production. Time spent on personal tuition you simply don’t get on a group workshop. The UK landscape photography workshops option also allowed for a really wonderful stress-free week away from the pressures of work; yet still being able to keep in touch via email and phone for any urgent matters. Waking up and working from a beautiful cottage set in the green hills and fresh air of Snowdonia, made a very relaxing yet instructive week away from work.”

Was the landscape workshop hard to complete? Is it good value for money?

“If you are like me, learning Photoshop in a way that I can apply to my creative vision can be a challenge. Web videos and manuals only tell a part of the story and putting the entire PS workflow together can easily become overwhelming. If you have a working knowledge of Photoshop, you will benefit greatly from David’s methodologies. He has a deep knowledge of the subject, is passionate and devoted to making sure that his students understand the process so that when they leave the workshop, they are able to continue the workflow once back home. It is an intense workshop that packs a lot into the six days but is taught in a very easy to follow way and great value for money.”

UK Workshops ~ Snowdonia National Park, Wales

Landscape photography workshops with peace and quiet, free of all the home and work distractions to concentrate on learning the whole process in the beautiful British landscape. A very relaxing, outdoor environment ideal for shooting landscape images at a moment’s notice if the weather is right. Workshops are based in beautiful self-catering holiday cottages.

8 Day Workshops
Important: UK Workshop Photographs

Snowdonia has great backdrops but the lack of structures, buildings etc. to use as focal points in the photographs and the dependence on weather conditions, makes it a hard area to find good quality photographs. Images taken are good workshop material but not portfolio material. Other workshop options must be considered if portfolio quality photographs are a priority.

My favorite landscape photography workshops cottage provided it is available ~ Snowdonia National Park, Wales
01 Workshop Location

The landscape photography workshops are held in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, only ten-minutes’ drive from the Welsh village of Betws-y-Coed on the edge of the national park and only 15 minutes’ drive from the hills and mountains.

02 Workshops Duration

Workshops are termed ‘8 days’. The first and last days include travel time to and from London. This means 6 full days spent learning but time is not restricted to 9 am – 5 pm. Days often start earlier and finish later depending on the individual.

03 How Do I get There

If you are travelling from overseas, you are more than welcome to travel with me. My suggestion is to book a hotel near Heathrow Airport where I can pick you up and drop you back on route. The drive to the Welsh landscape is about three hours.

04 YOU NEED TO BRING

Your personal camera equipment and tripod, also your laptop, but a laptop is not essential. Note book and pens and portable hard drive for PC to keep the workshop images. Good warm and waterproof clothing, including walking boots. Washing kit including personal washing towels.

05 INCLUDED

A desktop computer running Windows and current the Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom with a 27-inch Apple Cinema monitor for the teaching of Photoshop. All local petrol and parking costs. All bedding and linen, electricity, heating, cooking equipment; included in self-catering cottage.

06 Not Included

Cottage’s cost about £350 week. Workshops start and finish at the cottage. Travel to and from the UK or the cottage is not included. All meals; being bought in the local pub each night. All personal insurance; travel, accident, property and camera etc. is your responsibility.

07 Book Summer Workshops Early

You must book summer landscape photography workshops, June, July, August, many weeks before. During the UK school holiday season, all cottages get booked up very early. Also, spring, autumn and winter have more moody weather, have less people around and everything from cottages to air fares have great deals available. You will save a great deal of money and have the landscape almost to yourself. Ideal for photography.

08 Accommodation

The landscape photography workshops are all accommodated in beautiful, local and traditional self-catering holiday cottages. Cottages have separate bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and dining rooms, electric and heating but often no Wi-Fi connection. Generally, one double room and one single room. Cottages with more rooms can be searched for if required. Cottages normally run Saturday to Saturday.
